PCDC Leaders Analyze Alma-Ata Progress in JAMA Forum

“Now is an opportune time to revitalize a commitment to primary care,” write PCDC CEO Louise Cohen, MPH, and Board member Dave A. Chokshi, MD, MSc, in the JAMA Forum, a companion to The Journal of the American Medical Association.

The piece coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Alma-Ata Declaration, the first international statement to assert primary care as the key to health equity for all.

Much of this vision remains to be realized, according to the authors, who recommend two additional priorities: investing in infrastructure and evolving primary care around a renewed repertoire of relationships that promote health.

“Both are needed for primary care to achieve its promise as a driver of health equity and community well-being,” Cohen and Chokshi write.
