Henry J. Austin Health Center

Established nearly 50 years ago, HJAHC is the largest provider of non-hospital ambulatory care in the city of Trenton, New Jersey and the only FQHC in Mercer County. HJAHC currently operates four stand-alone sites and five sites within mental health institutions. HJAHC’s co-location approach enables them to serve special populations including individuals experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, and domestic violence; HJAHC’s FQHC designation includes Care for the Homeless. HJAHC provides integrated care, including primary care, mental health, and substance abuse treatment services.

In 2019, HJAHC sought to renovate it’s main site so as to deliver its care according to a Trauma Informed Care (TIC) model: organizing care teams and physical space to better understand, recognize and respond to the effects of trauma. As a design principle, TIC advocates that the physical healthcare environment should be therapeutic and restorative.  Because the site had not been renovated since originally built in 1977, PCDC provided nearly $3 million towards the $4 million project.  The facility was recapitalized in 2022.
