When North General Hospital went bankrupt in 2010, it could have been a devastating blow to the Harlem community. But, thanks to the rapid response by the entrepreneurial Institute for Family Health (IFH) and PCDC’s New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC) program, Harlem now has a vibrant 37,000 square foot health center instead of a vacant former hospital building.

IFH identified an idealsite for a new health center, and turned to PCDC to finance the purchase and renovation. PCDC put together a $30 million NMTC deal that enabled New York State and City grant funding to leverage private sector investment.

Today, the Family Health Center of Harlem gives 25,000 patients access to primary care, dental care, mental health services, asthma and diabetes specialists, and other critical services – all under one roof.

“Throughout its work in the primary care community, PCDC has demonstrated the ability to identify needs and the agility to fill them,” said Nirav Shah, MD, former Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health. “PCDC has dramatically increased and strengthened the safety net that serves the medical needs of underserved populations.”
