Christine C. Quinn has been Speaker of The New York City Council since 2006. Since her election, she has taken on a wide range of issues in such areas as public safety, environmental protection, early childhood education, hunger and nutrition, and affordable housing. Prior to becoming speaker, she served as Chair of the Health Committee. Before being elected to the City Council in 1999, Speaker Quinn served for five years as Chief of Staff to Councilmember Thomas K. Duane. She later served as Executive Director of the New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project. While at the Anti-Violence Project, Mayor Giuliani appointed Christine to be a member of the New York City Police/Community Relations Task Force. Speaker Quinn served as a delegate to the 2000 Democratic National Convention and was appointed to the 2004 Convention's Platform Committee. She received a bachelor's degree in Urban Studies and Education from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.
